For those who are just starting this whole “Fitness Journey” thing…
I’ll start by congratulating you. You’re ready to embark on your own “fitness journey.” It seems to be quite the trend these days. Girls getting healthy and transforming their bodies. So…why not you?
Maybe this is your first attempt where you have decided enough is enough and you want to really change. Or perhaps this is your 1000th attempt because you’ve never seemed to stick to it and get the results you were after. So you’re ready to try AGAIN. Attempt 1001.
Regardless…you WANT to change, right? Or you wouldn’t even be here… reading this blog.
This whole healthy lifestyle thing can appear overwhelming. I get it. You hear it from every fitness person. Eat clean, eat this and that, exercise x amount per day, sleep, drink water, don’t drink alcohol, don’t do this or that. Blah blah. You’re basically told to completely change your daily habits – everything you have ever known for perhaps your entire lifetime thus far. And that is scary. Change is scary.
But…if nothing changes, nothing changes.
So how about this approach? An action-based approach. What actions can you take in the next 24 hours that will put you in the right direction towards your goals? Don’t focus on a month from now, a year from now. Focus on the 24 hours you have right here, right in front of you.
TODAY: drink more water, eat chicken at lunch instead of pizza, sleep an extra hour, give up an extra 30 minutes of TV and go to the gym. These are little habitual changes that can take you a LONG way.
Before you know it, you will be doing these things without even thinking about it. You’re grabbing the healthier lunch choice every day. You’re packing your gym clothes every morning so you can head straight to your workout after work.
Then with time and consistency, you will get results. And the results motivate you to keep going and to get more.
Don’t worry about how long your fitness journey will take. Don’t worry about it being this long, never ending journey. Worry about what you can do for yourself right now, today. Create the habits. Show up and keep showing up.
That’s exactly how you should get started on your fitness journey and that’s exactly how you’re going to FINALLY stick to it long enough to get somewhere.
